The Athens Open WTA 250, with Vanda Pharmaceuticals as Title Sponsor, brings world-class international women’s tennis back to the Greek capital this July.
From 11-19 July 2026, Greece will become the center of the women’s tennis world as the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Athens Open WTA 250 takes place in Athens, marking the first WTA Tour event in the country since 1990. The event further strengthens Athens’ position as a destination for major international tennis events, following the successful return of ATP Tour competition to Greece in 2025.
The tournament will be held at the Athens Olympic Tennis Centre, the venue that hosted tennis during the 2004 Summer Olympics. Built for the Games and recently renovated as part of a wider upgrade of the Olympic facilities, it now represents one of the most prominent, high-quality, tennis venues in Greece. The Vanda Pharmaceuticals Athens Open tournament will be played outdoors, on three hard courts, offering more than 8500 seating capacity on the central court, and over 3500 on other playing courts.
More than 60 leading female players from around the world are expected to compete in Athens, including athletes ranked among the upper tiers of the WTA Rankings, offering Greek fans a rare opportunity to experience world-class women’s tennis on home soil. The tournament will also be broadcast internationally, bringing Athens and Greece to millions of viewers around the world and reinforcing the country’s presence on the global sporting stage.
With Vanda Pharmaceuticals Inc. as the title sponsor, the Athens Open promises to leave strong and impactful mark. Following Vanda Pharmaceutical’s successful role as the title sponsor of the ATP 250 event in Athens in 2025, Vanda now extends its commitment to professional tennis, reinforcing its growing presence in the sport and its support for both the ATP and WTA tours historic return to Greece.
“Having Vanda Pharmaceuticals Inc. by our side as the title partner once again is incredibly valuable for us. As we welcome the return of the WTA Tour to Athens after more than 35 years, this partnership will help us elevate Athens Open to the highest level, delivering a world-class experience for players and fans while honoring the city’s rich tennis history and legacy on the global stage”, said Tournament Director, Djordje Djokovic.
For Vanda Pharmaceuticals, supporting the WTA 250 event in Athens builds on its growing legacy in tennis and further strengthens its connection to the world of sport.
“We are proud to be the title sponsor of the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Athens Open! This tournament will be the return of women’s professional tennis to beautiful Athens for the first time in over thirty years in the summertime featuring top athletes from around the world. The Vanda Pharmaceuticals Athens open will be a historic event and aligns wonderfully with Vanda’s mission of promoting the pursuit of happiness and health globally” said Mihael H. Polymeropoulos MD, CEO, President and Chairman of the Board of Vanda Pharmaceuticals.
The return of the WTA Tour to Athens will be headlined by Greek star Maria Sakkari, adding a powerful generational storyline that makes the event even more meaningful for Greece. The inaugural Athens Trophy in 1986 famously saw Sakkari’s mother, Angeliki Kanellopoulou, reach the final, creating a unique family connection that now links the past and present of Greek tennis on the same stage.
In the following weeks, fans can look forward to player announcements, ticket sales, volunteer opportunities, and unique fan experiences that will create an unforgettable summer of tennis in Athens.
